First Seminar Trip to China

After several months preparation, the first Seminar tour in China organised by SESUN took place in Beijing Shanghai and Shenzhen in May 2005 under the project leader Prof. Andy Smith from Thames Valley University, UK. In this major knowledge sharing experience a total of 200 Chinese researchers and practitioners from companies such as, IBM, Nokia, Lenovo, Kingsoft, Sina, etc. of a wide range of field participated in the discussion.
The focus of this trip was on introducing the project as well as knowledge exchange on user-centred design, HCI in university curriculums, interaction design, and culture and international issues by building a bridge between an open audience in China and some of the major European experts in the field of HCI, usability and user-centred design. There were also attendants from academic field like Tsinghua University, Peking University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, etc.
The event started from the presentation of Prof. Andy Smith, project leader of SESUN, on the aim and themes of the project. Following the introduction, Prof. Jan Gullikson from Uppsala University, Sweden illustrated the 12 principles of User-centred design to the audience; Prof. Jim Alty from BCS HCI group, Prof. Liam Bannon from Limerick University, Ireland presented their research and experience on university curriculum and interaction design respectively. Prof Andy Smith also shared his research experience on culture and localisation issues.
To Summarise, the first SESUN Seminar served to set up the foundation of the SESUN knowledge community as regards contents, obtaining a significant contribution from the audience and project members.
