Second Seminar Trip to China

In October 2005, the best season in China, the second seminar tour of SESUN project took place in Xian, Kunming and Beijing.

In Xian, the event was organised in cooperation with Xian Jiaotong University. About 200 students and lecturers in Xian Jiaotong University and other nearby universities attended the seminar. Funda Denizhan from The Swedish Agency for Public Management gave a presentation on User Centred Design, followed by practical exercises. Liam Bannon joined Andy Smith reviewing the role of HCI / usability education in the global context, highlighting possible common core areas of study and areas where the curriculum may be localised to meet particular needs. The discussion after each session was very exciting. The audience was encouraged to share different opinion on designing food vending machines and course structures in the Chinese context.

Our Kunming event was joined with the first HCI conference in China organised by CHI China. We had a special seminar in the conference and have attracted about 50 delegates. The two presentations on UCD and HCI curriculum were all well-received.

In Beijing, apart from the original two presentations, Nigel Beven from Serco Usability UK joined the seminar and gave an half-day training on how the Common Industry Format standards for usability requirements and documentation can enhance the ability of both private and public organizations to embed mature usability practices.
